Former President James Buchanan purchased this estate in 1848, and at that time the property included three tracts totalling 22.5 acres. The remaining estate is 4.25 acres and includes the home, the Carriage House Visitor's Center, the privy, and the smoke/ice house. The gardens here feature two exhibition gardens that showcase various vegetables and herbs that were grown in the nineteenth century. Well behaved, leashed pets are welcome on the grounds, but not in the buildings.
