This park contains 113 caves, formed when sulfuric acid dissolved the surrounding limestone, creating some of the largest caves in North America. This includes Lechuguilla Cave, the nation's deepest limestone cave at 1,567 feet (478m) and fourth longest.
Leashed pets are allowed in developed areas, such as picnic areas, parking lots, and along gravel and paved roads. Leashes must be no longer than six feet. Pets are not allowed in the buildings or on trails.
