We’re firm believers that the most important part of traveling with your pets is making sure that you all come home together safely. So, we were in excited in 2013, when the Center for Pet Safety and Subaru teamed up to crash test twelve commonly used pet car harnesses. The results of that study were shocking: only one harness – the Sleepypod Clickit Utility – was shown to offer pets any protection in a car accident.
Since then Sleepypod has developed the Clickit Sport and turned us into true believers after receiving the highest possible crash test rating from the Center for Pet Safety for dogs weighing up to 90 pounds.
Crash Tested Carriers
Now, the Center for Pet Safety and Subaru tag team is back, and this time they’re crash testing pet carriers and crates. Their efforts are extremely important because there are no regulations to protect pets and their owners in this industry – companies are not required to test their own products, and those that do may use whatever criteria they deem appropriate.
Of the seven carriers tested, just two were named top performers:
The medium-sized PetEgo carrier was used in the crash test and the first run resulted in the connections failing and the carrier being ejected from the test bench. However, the company was contacted and provided the new ISOFIX Latch, which is currently in production. The second crash test using the new ISOFIX was successful, with only expected deformation to the connection base and the plastic buckle system occurring.
This carrier comes in three sizes and retails for between $140 and $160 when you purchase the carrier and the ISOFIX Latch Connection as a package. If you already have a Jet Set Forma Frame carrier, you can purchase the ISOFIX separately for $100. According to the PetEgo website, the ISOFIX will be available in September 2015.
The first Sleepypod Mobile Bed crash test was done without the new PPRS Handilock connections, and it resulted in the carrier flipping over on the bench, but the crash test pet stayed contained. During the second test, the Sleepypod carriers were tested side-by-side – one using the PPRS Handilock connections, and one without. In that test both carriers remained wholly connected to the test bench for the duration of the test.
The Sleepypod Mobile Pet Bed come in seven colors and retails for $180. Available accessories include an ultra-plush liner, an electric warming kit, and a zip-on mesh topper. Pet owners who purchased a Sleepypod Mobile Pet Bed before the PPRS Handilock system was available can receive one for free until December 31, 2015. Future purchases of the Sleepypod mobile bed will include the PPRS Handilock without additional charge.
The carriers that were tested, but did not receive “top performer” status in this study are:
- PetBuckle Auto Kennel Restraint
- Snoozer Roll Around Travel Dog Carrier Backpack 4-in-1
- PetMate Vari-Kennel Plastic Carrier
- Kurgo Wander Carrier
- Pet Ego Pet Tube

Crash Tested Crates
Of the five crates crash tested by the Center for Pet Safety and Subaru, only one was name a top performer:
The crash test on the Gunner Kennel was completed after using a connection kit (4 anchor straps) purchased with the kennel to secure the crate to the simulated cargo area, according to the manufacturer’s instructions. During the crash the anchor straps stayed in place and held firmly with only minor deformation of anchor pins on the crate. The kennel did not strike the setback, and had no structural integrity issues with the overall crate body. The locked door was not damaged and was easy to unlocked and open -and the crash test dog remained inside the crate.
The Gunner G1 Intermediate retails for $485 and fits most dogs up to 75 pounds.
The crates that were tested in this study, but did not receive “top performer” status are:
- 4Pets Proline Milan
- Mim Safe Variocage Single
- Roto Mold, LLC. Ruff Tough Kennel
- Midwest Wire Kennel with Rubber Anchor Straps
- Midwest Wire Kennel with Reinforced Cage Support System
