Located in the Pacific Ocean west of California, Hawaii is the only state in the United States that's completely surrounded by water. Consisting of six main islands—the Big Island, Maui, Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, and Lanai--the cascading waterfalls, black-sand beaches, rugged canyons, and generous spirit of “aloha” make Hawaii a special vacation destination.

Those traveling with pets to Hawaii should begin preparing weeks in advance to meet the state's animal quarantine requirements. The quarantine law and process are complex, so carefully review the State of Hawaii's Department of Agriculture's website when planning your trip.

Best Time To Visit

Best Time To Visit

Hawaii is blessed with a beautiful climate, so visiting with your pet any time of the year is possible. The Christmas and New Year period is the busiest time of the year, so if you're hoping to enjoy an "uncrowded" Hawaii, plan your trip during spring (April and May), or fall (September and October) when crowds and hotel prices both fall. When making your arrangements, keep in mind that May through October is Hawaii's dry season, and November through April is the rainy season.

Enjoy a cup of 100% Kona coffee at dog friendly Island Lava Java or Papa Kona Restaurant & Bar, overlooking Kailua Bay in Kailua-Kona.

Hawaii brewers love dogs, so be sure to visit Big Island Brewhaus, Ola Brew, and Hilo Brewing Company, all located on the Big Island.
