Carmel-by-the-Sea, or Carmel for short, is one of those places that makes you want to walk up and down every street to soak it in. A cross between well-to-do beach town and European village, Carmel is casual and classy – not to mention very dog friendly!
The sidewalks are sporadic – sometimes there, sometimes not, and sometimes exchanged for a dirt path or paved trail. The houses are an eclectic collection small cottages, modern statements, and humble mansions. Even the new houses here are understated – built to look like they’ve been there for years. They all have one thing in common, though … beautiful landscaping.
Known for it’s high-end boutiques, Carmel is the perfect place for a bit of retail therapy. There’s nothing quite like window shopping here, and when you’ve worked up an appetite, the pet friendly restaurant selection will leave you reeling. At the end of the day, you’ll find pet friendly hotels to meet any budget.
Ocean Avenue, running through the middle of town, leads down to the city beach – which also happens to be dog friendly. You’re furry friend is welcome to frolic in the waves – off leash!
I could find only two things to dislike about Carmel. The first is that most of their public parking is limited to two hours, which isn’t enough time to leisurely explore all there is to see. And the parking police are very attentive … so be careful. The second took me back a bit – dogs are not allowed in the city park. This seems counter-intuitive for such a dog friendly place, but I’ve decided not to hold it against this charming city. Dogs are welcomed so many places – if they want to keep the park dog-free, so be it.
If you’re in the area, don’t miss scenic 17-mile drive and plan to stop at Asilomar State Beach. Leashed dogs are welcome on the paths and beach, and the scenery will take your breath away.
