This refuge is a primary wintering area for Canadian geese, with populations ranging from 10,000 to 80,000 birds annually. Of the 10,670 acres comprising the refuge, there are nearly 7,000 acres of wetlands, including Silver Lake, which contains 3,050 acres of open water. Of the remaining land, about 1,000 acres are planted and the crops are left in the fields to feed the geese and other wildlife. The remaining land is covered by forest, permanent grass, or native prairie. Well behaved, leashed pets are welcome on the grounds, but not in the buildings.
