Fort Phil Kearney, the largest of the three forts built along the Bozeman Trail, was established to protect travelers from attack by Plains Indian groups and to prevent intertribal warfare in the region. Two major battles, the Wagon Box Fight and the Fetterman Fight occurred near the fort. Enjoy a self guided tour through the trails, complete with signs intended to tell the stories of conflict from the perspectives of both Native American groups and the military. The museum features several exhibits. Dogs are welcome on the grounds but not inside the museum. Dogs must be leashed and under their owner’s control at all times.
