This park displays the results of 70 million years of volcanism, migration, and evolution -- processes that thrust a bare land from the sea and clothed it with complex and unique ecosystems and a distinct human culture. The park encompasses diverse environments that range from sea level to the summit of the earth's most massive volcano, Mauna Loa at 13,677 feet. Kilauea, the world's most active volcano, offers scientists insights on the birth of the Hawaiian Islands and visitors views of dramatic volcanic landscapes. Leashed pets are allowed in developed areas, such as parking lots, and along gravel and paved roads. Pets are not allowed in the buildings, on the beaches, or in the picnic pavilions. Leashes must be no longer than six feet. Please note: parking and camping areas are sites where the endangered Nene goose frequents. Nene look very similar to the common Canada goose, but are the rarest goose in the world. Be alert and protect our native species. Pets may not be left unattended in vehicles.
