Founded in 1565, Saint Augustine is the oldest city in the United States. From its Spanish colonial architecture to sandy Atlantic beaches, you’ll find plenty to enjoy with your pet when you visit, starting with a picturesque stroll through the downtown.

This unique city can’t be beat. Especially with so many attractions and businesses that welcome pets with open arms.

Best Time To Visit

Because of its location in the northeastern part of the state, Saint Augustine doesn’t get the warm winter temperatures that people travel to Miami or the Florida Keys for. But with winter averages in the 60s (Fahrenheit), even January brings comfortable daytime temperatures with little likelihood of freezing.

Spring and fall are known for having less humidity and average temperatures in the 80s. And you'll find good deals on hotel rooms.

If you visit in the summer, expect short, daily thunderstorms in the afternoon and hot, humid days. Don’t forget to protect your pup’s paws; the pavement can get quite hot.

Things Not To Miss

Downtown you’ll find boutique-lined streets and restaurants with pet-friendly patios. The Spanish Military Hospital Museum welcomes dogs inside. And you can get an overview of the town on the Red Train Trolley Tour (sorry, only small pets comfortable on your lap are allowed). Walk the grounds of the Castillo de San Marcos, an original Spanish fort and catch the breeze off the river.

Saint Augustine’s oldest attraction is the Fountain of Youth, discovered by Ponce de Leon in 1565. Pets are welcome at this 15-acre archaeological park. Don’t forget to take a selfie so you can see if you’ve lost some wrinkles

Once the sun goes down, join one of the local ghost tours. In over 500 years of history, expect to encounter plenty of stranded spirits. Or visit the hammock trails of the St. Augustine Lighthouse to look for signs of paranormal activity.

If beaches are your thing, you’ll find the Fort Matanzas National Monument just a few minutes from downtown. Stroll through a live oak forest or hang out on the dog friendly beach.
