Last month when we were looking out at the swirling snow and fierce wind, we spent a lot of time imagining ourselves in Key West. Last week we finally arrived at this tropical haven for those needing a break from winter weather. Our day seeing this pet friendly island was a bit much for our dogs, but it could be exactly what you and your pet have been dreaming about.

The Florida Keys, a string of 822 low-lying islands, sweep off the tip of state like a tail. Given the laid-back, friendly attitude of the people here, this tail would definitely be wagging if it could.

Pets are welcome all over the island – from the shops, bars and restaurants on Duval Street, to the sunset celebration held every evening in Mallory Square, to the great off-leash dog park and nearby dog beach.

One thing that we found unusual, and the dogs found a little too interesting, were the free-ranging roosters. I thought they were very pretty – Ty and Buster thought they looked delicious.

You could easily spend a long weekend here and not check out all the pet friendly attractions or eat at all the dog friendly restaurants.

There is a nice selection of pet friendly hotels in Key West. You’ll also find a number of campgrounds in the area. If you travel with one of the breeds commonly discriminated against (Pit bulls, Rottweilers, Dobermans and German Shepherds) be sure to call in advance to confirm that your dog will be welcomed. The first campground we tried told us we couldn’t stay there because Buster is a German Shepherd. As it turned out, we couldn’t have been happier. We spent a week at the Sunshine Key Resort and absolutely loved it – it was the friendliest campground we’ve stayed at to date!
